Rosengarten Trek

Add your name to the TerraTreks mailing list by clicking on "Reserve Your Spot" or by completing the form at the bottom of the page.  I hope you will join me in the Rosengarten.
This year's trek includes a challenging scramble over rocks to the Santner Hut. The route up is steep, in places narrow, and requires the use of cables permanently fixed to the rock. We will not use a harness on this route. You must have previous experience to sign up for this hike and be sure-footed, although you do not need any special skills. You must not have a fear of heights, however.

Details:
One of the most interesting features of the Dolomites and the Rosengarten region is the multitude of coral fossils strewn along the trails. The period between 270 million and 200 million years ago can be seen from the trails in the layers of rocks illustrating the evolution of life over time. This area of the Dolomites represents one of the best conserved examples of fossil reefs and the tropical environments of the Mesozoic period. If you’re a fossil hunter, you’ll be thrilled by the Rosengarten.

The start in Bolzano will give you the opportunity to visit the Ötzi the Iceman Museum. The museum provides a fascinating look into life 5000 years ago. Ötzi is a glacier mummy from the Copper Age who was discovered on accident by hikers in 1991. After a territorial dispute between Austria and Italy it was finally determined that he was found on the Italian side of the border separating the two countries. Ötzi has been the subject of intensive research ever since his discovery. So much to see and do and the trek hasn't even started yet.

Our accommodations include some of the best huts in the Alpine Association and we begin our trek at the 5-star resort, Cyprianerhof.  The views are amazing, and the food is delicious.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
You need a head for heights, sure-footedness and mountain experience. You do not need technical climbing skills to participate in this hike, but you should be comfortable scrambling across boulders, hiking steep inclines and declines. There will be a few segments with cables and/or ladders; you should be comfortable navigating trails with steep drop-offs.

Because multi-day hikes are challenging you will need to have the required items before we depart Bolzano. If you arrive without the proper gear, you will either need to purchase it, at your own expense before we depart, or regrettably, you will not be able to join the hike for safety reasons.

This hike is not van supported so you will carry what you need from hut to hut. Luggage is stored at the first night's hotel for pick-up when we return.
